The best radiator depends on your specific needs. For high heat output and efficiency, aluminium radiators are excellent due to their quick heating response and low water content. Cast iron radiators are ideal for traditional homes and benefit from their ability to retain heat longer.

Radiators need bleeding when there are air pockets trapped in the system, which can cause cold spots at the top of the radiator. This typically results in inefficient heating and increased energy costs. Bleeding your radiators once a year or whenever you notice these issues is advisable.

To bleed a radiator, use a radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator. Place a cloth below to catch any drips and slowly turn the key counterclockwise until you hear the hiss of escaping air. Once water begins to leak out, tighten the valve.

To turn off a radiator, you’ll need to turn the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) to the ‘0’ or ‘off’ position. Additionally, ensure the lockshield valve on the other side of the radiator is closed by turning it clockwise with an adjustable spanner.

Changing a radiator involves draining the existing radiator, removing it from the wall, and installing a new one in its place. This can involve adjusting pipe fittings and possibly resizing pipes. It’s often best handled by a professional to ensure proper installation.

Radiators are commonly placed under windows to counteract the cold air that can enter through window panes, creating a more balanced room temperature. The rising heat from the radiator warms the cooler air coming from the window, improving overall heating efficiency.
